Takotsubo, Ioana Mandrescu 2026

Takotsubo, a multichannel sound and video installation by Ioana Mandrescu, is an investigation in the relationship between physiological processes and emotional experience. Taking its name from Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, also known as broken heart syndrome, the project brings together medical data, custom-made bronze speakers, mirrors, and choreographed movement. Through the translation of bodily data into sound and image, she examines the obsessive nature of emotional pain and its effects on perception and identity. Drawing on the myth of Narcissus, Takotsubo reflects on the tension between self-perception and reality, inviting us to consider how we become absorbed in our own image and how the body registers what words cannot always express.

This project is supported by a production grant from the Flemish Community.
